La mesure LEIS est bas\u00e9e sur la spectroscopie d&#039;imp\u00e9dance \u00e9lectrochimique (EIS) globale, dans laquelle l&#039;imp\u00e9dance est mesur\u00e9e en fonction de la fr\u00e9quence appliqu\u00e9e. En LEIS, la sonde \u00e0 deux \u00e9lectrodes est utilis\u00e9e pour mesurer le courant alternatif local circulant dans un \u00e9lectrolyte au-dessus d&#039;un \u00e9chantillon polaris\u00e9. Bien que l&#039;\u00e9chantillon serve d&#039;\u00e9lectrode de travail dans les \u00e9tudes LEIS, il est possible de mesurer des \u00e9chantillons pr\u00e9sentant une faible activit\u00e9 \u00e9lectrochimique, comme les \u00e9chantillons rev\u00eatus. L&#039;\u00e9chantillon, la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence et la contre-\u00e9lectrode forment une cellule \u00e0 trois \u00e9lectrodes classique dans laquelle la mesure d&#039;EIS est effectu\u00e9e. La sonde est une bi-\u00e9lectrode distincte de la cellule \u00e9tudi\u00e9e, et elle se contente de surveiller cette derni\u00e8re. N&#039;\u00e9tant pas directement impliqu\u00e9e dans la cellule \u00e0 trois \u00e9lectrodes, la bi-\u00e9lectrode n&#039;influence pas les processus qui s&#039;y d\u00e9roulent.
